Inspired by one of my favorite feel-good movies, Julie & Julia, I decided to embark on a journey of my own:  choose one author per year and cook through their entire cookbook in 365 days.  While the cookbooks I’ve chosen haven’t consisted of 524 recipes, like Julia Child’s The Joy of Cooking, it’s proven to be a fun adventure none-the-less!

Pursuing this goal has expanded my culinary abilities, forced me to explore new foods in what I thought was an already diverse diet, and form many sweet memories by sharing my creations with others through hosting dinners and surprising friends with gifts.  I’ve been documenting my journey on Instragram by using #cookbookinayear, so go on and take a look!

Each year I’ll recap my husband and my favorite recipes in hopes that you’ll grab the book and give it a try yourself!

2016 – But I Could Never Go Vegan! by Kristy Turner

We call Kristy the “Queen of Flavor” in our house for a reason.  She is a master with creating dishes that will excite your tastebuds and leave you feeling satisfied and nourished while having a ton of fun in the kitchen!  Rather than your typical “breakfast, lunch, dinner” categories Kristy refutes common reasons for not considering a vegan diet with recipes that show you it truly is possible.

Lentil, Chard, & Sweet Potato Curry (p. 143) – When you’re tempted to eat leftover curry for breakfast it must be good!  :) I couldn’t get enough of this dish!


2015 – Choosing Raw by Gena Hamshaw

15 Essentials

Cashew Cheese (p. 99) – Made with cashews, but having the texture of cream cheese or a spreadable goat cheese.  Make a big batch to have handy for any cheesy craving that comes your way.

Chocomole (p. 110) – You’ll be in taste-bud heaven with just a few simple ingredients.  Rich & creamy, truly a new “essential” in our home. 😉

Milks, Juices, and Smoothies

Classic Almond Milk (p.98) – Oh, it’s just so creamy and rich.  Can almond milk be addictive? 😉

Cucumber Cooler (p. 112) – Crisp and refreshing!  Cucumber, pear, mint, lime, and coconut water create the perfect combination to cool down and refuel on a hot day.


Easy Berry Breakfast Pizza (p. 153) – A sweet and rich avocado pudding spread on a sprouted tortilla and topped with beautiful berries and mint.  A very refreshing way to start your day!

Raw Vegan Bircher Muesli (p. 155) – This dish is perfect for hot summer mornings, yet filling enough to hold you through the morning.

Chocolate Açaí Bowl (p. 209) – This tropical dish is the perfect way to start a Summer morning.  Açaí pulp, frozen bananas and coconut water give this dish a lightly sweet and refreshing taste, while the cacao powder gives the bowl a intense and rich flavor.

Hemp-Seed Power Balls (p. 119) – I make a double or triple batch and store these in the freezer for a quick power snack.

Superfood Trail Mix (p. 120) – I assumed this trail mix would be, well, just another trail mix, but there’s something about the combo of the pistachios, cashews, goji berries, mulberries, and cacao nibs that is uniquely fabulous.


Curried Chickpea and Carrot Salad (p. 162) – This curry dressing will knock your socks off!  Paired with the sweetness of freshly grated carrots and plump raisins, it’s a fabulous combo sure to keep you coming back for more.

Nori Rolls with Gingery Almond Pâté and Raw Veggies (p.  182) – This recipe has been on regular rotation in our home since the first bite!

Dressings, Sauces, Dips, and Spreads

Almond Butter and Sun-Dried Tomato Dressing (p. 127) – I was not expecting to enjoy anything that combined almond butter and tomatoes, but this dressing took me by surprise and has easily become one of my favorites!

Classic Zucchini Hummus (p. 130) – A beautiful spin on a traditional hummus using one of Summer’s most abundant veggies.

Curried Sweet Potato Hummus (p. 131) – Every time I make sweet potatoes, I am sure to bake extra so I can whip up a batch of this hummus.  It’s rich, creamy, and tangy – the perfect combo!

Red Lentil and Walnut Hummus (p. 131) – Good enough to serve on Super Bowl Sunday?  You bet!  Yes, I’m the lady who takes a bean dip and crudités platter to a “manly” party, but hey, it was truly a win! 😉


Kale Salad with Sweet Potato, Almonds, and Creamy Maple Chipotle Dressing (p. 141) – This salad is rich and comforting thanks to the sweet potatoes and creamy dressing.

Raw Cobb Salad (p. 145) – This isn’t your typical salad.  Topped with eggplant “bacon” and rich cashew cheese, the bold and salty flavors are satisfying and the salad is hearty enough to keep you running strong.


Heat-free Lentil and Walnut Tacos (p. 191) – A stress-free meal that is packed with flavor and nutrients.

Raw Pad Thai (p. 191) – This was the first time I tried kelp noodles, a type of seaweed rich in calcium, iron, and iodine.  A quick dish to throw together with a crunchy texture, creamy dressing, and packed with nutrients.


Coconutty for Chocolate Chip Cookies (p. 230) – Sweet and indulgent yet incredibly nutritious.  I love the crunch of the cacao nibs.

Raw Peach Cobbler (p. 233) – I LOVE raw desserts in the Summer and this cobbler sure hits the spot!  Juicy peaches and a delectable pecan crumble make perfect end to a hot day and is nutritious enough to be breakfast too!

Simple Raw Vanilla Macaroons (p. 237) – I made these for a party and they received raving reviews – “wait, you mean these are actually healthy?”…yes, indeed!:)

Cherry Vanilla Tahini Ice Cream (p. 245) – Tahini makes this dairy-free dessert so rich and smooth, you’ll be sure to come back for seconds!


2014 – The Oh She Glows Cookbook by Angela Liddon

Angela is a master-mind in the kitchen.   Her ability to create nutrient-rich dishes that are intensely satisfying to all palates is an incredible skill.   I turn to her recipes when entertaining guests or looking for a truly special dish for loved ones.   You certainly won’t be disappointed by her creations that will leave you glowing from the inside out!


Ultimate Nutty Granola Clutters (p. 31) – Truly addictive.  Enough said. 😉

Out-the-Door Chia Power Doughnuts (p. 41) – Quick, easy & so much fun!

Loaded Savory Oatmeal & Lentil Bowl (p. 47) – A power bowl that’s low in sugar but high in taste, this has become one of our favorite ways to start a cold winter morning.

Apple Pie Oatmeal (p. 49) – Hearty, naturally sweet, and certainly reminiscent of grandma’s apple pie.

Crunchy Seed & Oat Flatbread (p. 51) – Though this is in the breakfast section, I prefer it with soup or a salad.  A perfect gluten-free, chewy, comforting part of any meal!

Glowing Mojo-ito Green Monster (p. 59) – Refreshing mint, creamy avocado, and zesty lime is a perfect combination!

Morning Glory Smoothies (p. 66) – My hubby loves this smoothie, eating is several times a week (and fighting off my sneaky spoon each time. Hehe.)

Metabolism-Boosting Green Citrus Tea (p. 73) – Green tea infused with grapefruit, lemon, and a dash of cayenne.  Its great hot or cold so you can enjoy it all year long!


Glowing Strawberry-Mango Guacamole (p. 81) – A fun twist on traditional guacamole.  Be sure to stay close because it will go fast!

Life-Affirming Warm Nacho Dip (p. 83) – The name says it all.  Warm, creamy, rich.  A real comfort food.

Taco Fiesta Potato Crisps (p. 85) – Crispy potato slices topped with crunchy walnut taco meet, cashew sour cream, and salsa.

Oil-free Baked Falafel Bites with Lemon-Tahini Dressing (p. 96) – We love Mediterranean and this is a dish that will leave you feeling light and energized.


Walnut, Avocado & Pear Salad with Marinated Portobello Caps & Red Onion (p. 103) – In my mind nothing beats a crisp salad with warm and hearty toppings and adding the sweetness of pears makes for a delicious mix.

On the Mend Spiced Red Lentil-Kale Soup (p. 131) – A hearty, one pot soup loaded with flavor and nutrition!

Sweet Potato & Black Bean Enchiladas with Avocado-Cilantro Cream Sauce (p. 147) – My meat and cheese lovin’ father-in-law absolutely loved this dish.  I think that says it all.:)

Broccoli & Cashew Cheese-Quinoa Burrito (p. 159) – Reminiscent of broccoli-cheese casserole, this burrito is loaded with protein from gluten-free quinoa.  It’s my ultimate comfort food.

Lentil-Walnut Loaf (p. 167) – Labor intensive, but you’ll see its worth every minute on your first bite.

Enlightened Miso Power Bowl (p. 177) – Often requested by my hubby, this dish can be easily pulled together and will keep you fueled for hours.


Marinated Italian Mushrooms (p. 193) – Marinate overnight for an incredibly delicious side dish in a hurry.

Marinated Balsamic, Maple & Garlic Tempeh (p. 199) – A perfect topping for salads, stir-fry’s, and wraps.

Roasted Brussels Sprouts with Fingerling Potatoes & Rosemary (p. 205) – I got my hubby to like Brussels sprouts with this recipe.  Victory!!

Power Snacks

Super-Power Chia Bread (p. 229) – Chewy, hearty, and dense.  Plus, its gluten-free, so no need to say goodbye to the breads you love with this recipe on hand!

Cacao Crunch Almond Butter-Banana Bites (p. 233) – These are like little ice cream sundaes on a stick!

Peanut Butter Cookie Dough Bites (p. 235) – Store a big batch in the freezer for a delicious sweet treat any time!


Chilled Chocolate-Espresso Torte with Toasted Hazelnut Crust (p. 241) – The dessert that celebrated my husband’s 30th year of life.  I wish birthdays occurred more often….

Raw Pumpkin-Maple Pie with Baked Oat Crust (p. 247) – I quote a guest eating this at our Thanksgiving dinner. Said after one bite and a long pause “This….is…the best pumpkin pie I’ve had in my entire life.”  Convinced? 😉

Fudgy Mocha Pudding Cake (p. 257) – The name says it all.  I’m salivating just thinking about it.


Banana Soft Serve (p. 289) – The perfect substitute for soft-serve ice cream on a warm summer day.

Pumpkin Pie Pecan Butter (p. 293) – A fabulous spread for toast or muffins and also a great dip for apples.  Or, you can just eat it straight from the jar with a spoon, like I do. 😉

Crunchy Maple-Cinnamon Roasted Almond Butter (p. 295) – By far one of my favorite spreads of all time!  Every time I eat it I’m taken back to our family summer vacation on the North Carolina coast where I ate this every single morning surrounded by the ones I love.
